What Is Shilajit Good For?

In short: Shilajit has been valued within Ayurveda for centuries as a Rasayana — a substance associated with vitality, resilience and maintaining wellbeing over time. What Shilajit may support and what it cannot promise are two different questions, and this article tries to answer both honestly.

What is Shilajit good for?

When somebody searches for this question, they are rarely asking for a list of compounds. Usually there is something more personal underneath it.

Could this help with the way I am feeling?

For many people that means tiredness, reduced resilience, a demanding routine that does not leave much room for recovery, or simply a sense that they are not quite as capable as they would like to be. They are functioning. But they do not feel particularly vital.

Shilajit has been used within Ayurveda for a very long time, and its traditional reputation covers a broad range of areas: vitality, physical strength, male health, resilience and maintaining wellbeing over time. Modern researchers have now begun investigating specific aspects of that traditional reputation, and some of the human evidence is genuinely interesting.

But before going through those areas, there is one distinction worth making clearly at the start.

Vitality is not the same thing as stimulation. Shilajit is not a stimulant. It does not work like caffeine. If you take it expecting to feel an immediate lift twenty minutes later, you are likely to be disappointed — not because the product has failed, but because that is not what Shilajit is, or what Ayurveda ever intended it to be.

The traditional Ayurvedic idea behind Shilajit is much broader than getting through today's workload. It belongs to a category of practice concerned with maintaining resilience and capability over time. That distinction matters for everything that follows.

What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a naturally occurring phytomineral substance found primarily in mountainous regions including the Himalayas, Altai and other high-altitude areas. It forms over long periods through the decomposition of organic plant material and is collected from rock surfaces and crevices.

Chemically, Shilajit is complex. It is not a single isolated ingredient. Modern analytical reviews describe it as containing humic substances — including fulvic components — alongside minerals, trace elements and various organic compounds.[1,2] Analytical work has identified elements including calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese, though composition varies meaningfully between samples and geographical sources.[3]

That variability matters practically. The word "Shilajit" on a label does not tell you everything about what is in the container. Where the material originates, how it is collected, how it is processed and whether it has been independently tested all affect what you are actually buying.

Fulvic substances

Fulvic acid is frequently discussed in connection with Shilajit, and for good reason — fulvic substances are an important part of the Shilajit matrix and have attracted significant scientific interest. But it would be an oversimplification to reduce Shilajit entirely to one percentage figure. Ayurveda valued Shilajit as a whole material within the Rasayana tradition, not as a delivery mechanism for an isolated compound. Modern chemistry helps us understand individual constituents without replacing the traditional substance.

Purification and Shodhana

Purification is sometimes presented as though it is a modern quality-control invention applied to an ancient substance. In fact, traditional Ayurvedic pharmacy already contains the concept of Shodhana — the processing or purification of raw materials before use. Published analytical work has examined changes in Shilajit composition following traditional processing methods.[4]

Traditional purification and modern laboratory testing are not competing ideas. They complement one another. Respecting an ancient substance does not mean refusing to use modern tools to understand what is in it.

On testing: Independent laboratory analysis can support statements about composition, purity and product quality. It cannot guarantee that a supplement will produce a particular effect in an individual. Those are different questions, and it is important not to confuse them.

Shilajit and Rasayana: a different way of thinking about supplements

Shilajit is described in traditional Indian medical literature as one of the most important Rasayana substances in Ayurveda.[5] Understanding what Rasayana means changes the way the whole conversation about Shilajit should be framed.

Rasayana is not a category of stimulants or performance enhancers. It is an Ayurvedic approach concerned with rejuvenation, nourishment, vitality and maintaining the capacity to remain well and resilient over time. The academic literature on Rasayana describes it as concerned with health maintenance rather than simply one isolated pharmacological endpoint.[6]

The modern supplement industry tends to ask: what does it boost, how quickly does it work, can I feel it, how much can I take? Rasayana asks a different set of questions: what supports me over time, what helps me maintain resilience rather than continually recovering from depletion, what amount is appropriate rather than simply stronger, does this fit me personally?

That distinction has practical implications for how somebody should use Shilajit, what they should expect from it and how they should judge whether it is working for them. Shilajit may support a wider routine. It cannot become the routine. Sleep, food, movement, recovery and sensible boundaries still matter — and no supplement changes that.

Vitality and physical resilience

Vitality is probably the most common reason people explore Shilajit, and it is also the area where language matters most. If we simply say Shilajit gives people energy, some readers will expect something similar to caffeine: take it, feel a rush, become more alert. That is not what Shilajit is.

Within the Rasayana tradition, vitality is a broader concept. It is about maintaining physical strength, resilience and the capacity to remain capable over time — not about creating an artificial sensation so that you can push through exhaustion that your body is asking you to address.

Modern human research has investigated Shilajit in relation to physical performance. A placebo-controlled study in 63 recreationally active men examined supplementation over eight weeks and reported that the 500 mg/day group showed smaller fatigue-related reductions in muscular strength compared with placebo, alongside differences in a marker of connective tissue turnover.[7] A separate study examined changes in skeletal muscle gene expression following Shilajit supplementation in humans.[8]

These findings are worth discussing. They do not establish that Shilajit will make an exhausted office worker suddenly feel energetic in the afternoon. Those are completely different claims. What the research does suggest is that Shilajit may have a role in supporting physical resilience over time — which is much closer to the Rasayana idea than the energy-drink framing.

Worth asking first: If you are consistently exhausted, the more important question may be why. The NHS lists insufficient sleep, lifestyle factors and stress among common causes of tiredness, and recommends speaking to a GP when fatigue has lasted several weeks without a clear explanation, affects daily life, or occurs alongside other symptoms. Shilajit should not become a way of avoiding that question.

Male vitality and testosterone

Shilajit has a longstanding association within Ayurveda with male vitality, and this is one of the areas where traditional interest and modern human research have begun to overlap most clearly.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated purified Shilajit in healthy men aged 45–55 over 90 days. Researchers reported significantly higher total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS in the Shilajit group compared with placebo.[9] A separate study investigated Shilajit in relation to male reproductive parameters.[10]

That is meaningful evidence and there is no reason to be apologetic about discussing it. A defensible way to frame it is: Shilajit has traditionally been associated with male vitality, and controlled human research has investigated this relationship, including a study reporting changes in testosterone in healthy middle-aged men.

What that does not mean: every man taking every Shilajit product will experience the same change. Shilajit is not a treatment for clinically low testosterone. Individual responses will vary, and the study involved a specific population, preparation and duration.

Healthy ageing

Healthy ageing is one of the areas where Rasayana philosophy is most useful, because it stops the conversation becoming an anti-ageing marketing claim.

The Rasayana approach to ageing is not about feeling younger or reversing time. It is about maintaining resilience, physical capability and vitality for as long as reasonably possible — which is a meaningfully different idea. Traditional Ayurvedic literature has described Shilajit within this broader context of supporting the person over the lifespan.[5]

Modern researchers have also investigated Shilajit in relation to specific age-related outcomes. A 48-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial studied 60 postmenopausal women aged 45–65 with osteopenia. Participants received either placebo or a standardised Shilajit extract. Researchers reported that the Shilajit groups showed attenuated reductions in bone mineral density compared with placebo, alongside changes in bone-turnover markers, oxidative-stress markers and inflammatory markers including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein.[11]

That does not prove Shilajit slows ageing. It shows why researchers continue to investigate a substance traditionally associated with maintaining vitality over the lifespan. The Rasayana framework and the modern study are asking related but different questions, and both are worth understanding.

Inflammation and oxidative stress

Of the areas covered in this article, inflammation is where the human evidence is perhaps most specific. The postmenopausal osteopenia trial mentioned above reported reductions in hsCRP — a marker of systemic inflammation — in the Shilajit groups compared with placebo, alongside changes in oxidative-stress markers.[11]

A defensible statement is: a controlled human study in postmenopausal women with osteopenia found reductions in an inflammatory marker during supplementation with a standardised Shilajit extract. That is stronger than saying "scientists think Shilajit might have anti-inflammatory properties", but more accurate than "Shilajit reduces inflammation in everyone". The trial involved a particular population, extract and set of measurements.

Preclinical research has also investigated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity associated with Shilajit and its constituents.[12] That gives us a broader research context, while the human trial provides a more specific finding.

Minerals and fulvic substances

This section is less about a specific health benefit and more about understanding what Shilajit actually is — which matters for making a sensible decision about whether to use it.

Shilajit contains a range of minerals in organic form alongside fulvic and humic substances. Analytical research has identified numerous elements within Shilajit samples, though the specific composition varies between sources and preparations.[1,3] This is one of the reasons why knowing something about the material you are buying matters.

Fulvic substances are worth understanding in their own right. They have attracted research interest in relation to mineral bioavailability and other biological processes. But fulvic acid content alone is not a complete measure of Shilajit quality, and a high percentage figure does not automatically translate into a stronger health effect for the individual taking it.

The mineral story is most useful for explaining why Shilajit is a complex natural material rather than a simple isolated supplement — and why sourcing, purification and independent testing all matter when choosing a product.

Brain and cognition

Cognition is a legitimate area of traditional and scientific interest, provided we are careful about what the evidence actually establishes.

Within Ayurveda, Rasayana is not purely about physical strength. It encompasses a broader approach to maintaining the person — physically and mentally — over time. Shilajit has traditionally been valued within this wider context.

Modern researchers have become interested in Shilajit and some of its components in relation to brain health. Laboratory research has investigated fulvic acid and tau protein aggregation — a process relevant to Alzheimer's research — with one in-vitro study finding that fulvic acid inhibited aggregation of tau fibrils and promoted disassembly of preformed fibrils.[13] A published review has examined Shilajit as a phytocomplex with potential procognitive activity.[14]

That is worth discussing. What it does not establish is that taking Shilajit improves memory or prevents dementia. The tau research was laboratory research. It did not give Shilajit to people and demonstrate improved cognitive outcomes. The distinction between interesting laboratory findings and proven human clinical effects is important, and this article will not blur it.

Immune resilience

Immunity is worth including, but the framing matters. "Shilajit boosts the immune system" is both scientifically vague and commercially uninteresting. The Rasayana concept of resilience gives us a more accurate and more distinctive way to discuss it.

Rasayana is concerned with the body's capacity to remain well over time — which is a broader idea than simply increasing one isolated biological response. Modern reviews of Shilajit's pharmacological activity have discussed immunomodulatory effects among the areas investigated, though much of this evidence remains preclinical.[12] Laboratory research has also investigated antiviral activity of Shilajit-related humic substances.

The honest position is: there is a legitimate traditional rationale for including immune resilience in a discussion of Shilajit as a Rasayana, and modern research has begun to investigate specific aspects of this. The evidence is earlier-stage than in some other areas, and we should say so.

Is Shilajit right for you?

This is the question the article should help you answer for yourself — and the honest answer is that it depends on who you are and what you are actually hoping it will do.

Shilajit makes most sense for somebody who is already trying to take reasonable care of themselves and wants to explore whether a traditional Rasayana has a useful place in that foundation. They might be interested in general vitality and resilience, maintaining physical capability, male health, healthy ageing or the Ayurvedic philosophy itself. They do not necessarily need to have a specific problem that Shilajit is supposed to fix.

The person I am less comfortable selling to is somebody saying: I am completely exhausted, I am sleeping five hours a night and I need something that will keep me going. That is not what Shilajit Gold+ is for. If somebody is consistently depleted because they are working too much, sleeping too little and recovering badly, Shilajit should not become an excuse to continue doing that.

If you have been unusually tired for several weeks, cannot explain why, or the tiredness is affecting your daily life, the more important step is to investigate that — not to reach for a supplement. NHS guidance recommends speaking to a GP when fatigue has lasted several weeks without a clear explanation or occurs alongside other symptoms.

And if what you are really looking for is something you can feel immediately — a noticeable lift, a buzz, a sensation — Shilajit may disappoint you. Not feeling a dramatic effect does not automatically mean the product is not working. But equally, if you use it appropriately and consistently and cannot identify anything meaningful enough to justify continuing, that is a completely legitimate conclusion.
