Shilajit Benefits for Men

In short: Shilajit has genuine male-specific human research — including a controlled trial showing testosterone increases in healthy middle-aged men, human fertility research in men with oligospermia, and controlled performance research in recreationally active men. That evidence deserves to be taken seriously. It does not mean every man needs Shilajit, or that one substance can optimise every aspect of male health.

What men are really asking

When somebody searches "Shilajit benefits for men", they are usually trying to answer a more personal question: "Is there actually something about Shilajit that is particularly relevant to me as a man?" Underneath that, the questions are often practical: Could it support my energy or physical resilience? What does the testosterone research actually show? Is there credible evidence around male fertility? Is Shilajit mainly about sexual performance, or is that marketing?

Those are reasonable questions because some of the better-known human Shilajit research really has been conducted specifically in men. We should not hide that. But the biggest mistake men's supplement content makes is taking a handful of male studies and turning them into a much bigger promise: more testosterone equals more masculinity equals more muscle equals more sex drive equals better performance.

The studies do not establish that whole chain.

A note from the founder

I did not start taking Shilajit because I was looking for a testosterone boost or a performance edge. I started because I was genuinely curious about what the Ayurvedic tradition was pointing at — and whether there was anything in the modern research worth taking seriously.

What I found was that the research is more interesting than most supplement marketing suggests, and more limited than most supplement marketing admits. There are real human studies. They measured real outcomes. And they were conducted in specific populations, with specific preparations, over specific periods. That matters.

I also found that the Shilajit market had a serious quality problem. Products with no disclosed origin, no independent testing, no declared fulvic acid content, and no honest conversation about what the research actually showed. That is what led to Gold+. Not a desire to sell the most powerful testosterone formula — a desire to sell something I could stand behind with a certificate of analysis and an honest article.

I did not experience Shilajit as an instant stimulant. I did not feel it on day one. I judged it over time, as part of a wider routine, and I think that is the right way to approach it. Gold+ was built around that philosophy: measurable composition, independent testing, and realistic expectations.

The male evidence map

Before going into detail, it helps to see what has actually been studied in men and what those studies did and did not measure.

Testosterone — confident, specific and properly bounded

Testosterone is one area where Shilajit has genuine male-specific human evidence, and it deserves to be described confidently rather than buried under excessive caveats.

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, healthy men aged 45–55 received purified Shilajit at 250 mg twice daily for 90 consecutive days. Compared with placebo, the Shilajit group showed statistically significant increases in total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS. LH and FSH were reported as remaining well maintained. [1]

That is meaningful evidence. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial is substantially more informative than an animal study, a mechanism, a customer testimonial or a before-and-after anecdote. Testosterone was directly measured in a controlled human trial, and the treatment group differed significantly from placebo.

The evidence is real. The population and preparation matter. And testosterone should remain testosterone — not become a marketing shortcut for every benefit men have been taught to associate with it.

What the study does not establish. The participants were healthy volunteers aged 45–55 — not patients being treated for diagnosed hypogonadism or testosterone deficiency. The trial did not prove improvements in libido, erections, muscle growth, energy or masculine performance. Those are separate outcomes requiring separate evidence.

Testosterone is not shorthand for masculinity. Supplement marketing commonly translates "testosterone increased" into more drive, more libido, more confidence, more aggression, more muscle and better erections. The trial measured hormones. [1] It should not be used as proof of outcomes the study did not measure.

Not a treatment for low testosterone. Shilajit is not a replacement for testosterone therapy and cannot be promised to produce the same hormonal response in every man. If a man has symptoms suggesting testosterone deficiency, that is a medical assessment question rather than something to redirect towards a supplement.

Supporting context from the fertility study. The oligospermia study also reported a 23.5% increase in serum testosterone among completers alongside changes in semen parameters. [2] That provides another male human dataset in which testosterone changed, but it involved a different population, preparation and study design. It is supportive context, not a duplicate replication of the RCT.

Physical performance, strength and fatigue

Physical performance is another area where Shilajit has genuine male-specific human research — and another area where the claims often travel much further than the studies.

The eight-week strength study. A randomised study involved 63 recreationally active men who received placebo, 250 mg/day or 500 mg/day of purified Shilajit for eight weeks. Researchers then used a fatiguing exercise protocol and measured changes in maximal voluntary isometric strength. The clearest favourable result occurred with 500 mg/day in men with higher baseline strength, who experienced a smaller fatigue-induced decline in maximal strength than the placebo and lower-dose groups. [3]

That is meaningful evidence around fatigue-related muscular performance. It is not evidence that Shilajit makes men stronger, builds larger muscles or increases one-repetition maximum. Retaining more strength under fatigue is not the same as gaining more muscle or becoming stronger overall.

The subgroup finding matters. The clearest effect appeared in men with higher baseline strength. That does not mean Shilajit only works if you are already strong, but it does mean we should not write as though every participant responded identically.

The collagen biomarker study. A separate randomised trial in 35 recreationally trained men reported increases in serum pro-c1α1, a biomarker associated with type-I collagen synthesis, with Shilajit supplementation. [4] That is useful evidence for the connective-tissue conversation. It does not establish stronger tendons, fewer injuries, less soreness or faster return to training.

The 2026 resin pilot. A more recent open-label study in 25 healthy men aged 21–55 taking Shilajit resin at 500 mg/day for 28 days reported improvements across measures of strength, endurance, aerobic capacity and fatigue. [5] That is encouraging preliminary evidence. The study was small, single-arm and had no placebo group, so it should not be treated as equivalent to a strong placebo-controlled trial.

Shilajit is not a stimulant-style pre-workout. The principal controlled performance research involved eight weeks of repeated supplementation, not taking one serving shortly before training and measuring an acute performance spike. The better framing is: Shilajit has emerging human evidence around physical resilience and muscular biology when used consistently — not "take it 30 minutes before the gym for explosive energy."

What we can and cannot say about physical performance

What we can reasonably say:

  • Human research in men suggests Shilajit may influence fatigue-related muscular performance
  • Human research has reported changes in collagen-related biomarkers and skeletal-muscle extracellular-matrix biology
  • A newer resin pilot provides encouraging preliminary evidence across additional performance measures

What we should not claim:

  • "Shilajit builds muscle" or "Shilajit guarantees strength gains"
  • "Shilajit prevents injuries" or "Shilajit makes you recover faster"
  • "Take it immediately before training for a performance boost"

Male fertility — the oligospermia research

Male fertility is one area where Shilajit has direct human research, and it deserves proper credit without being turned into a fertility-treatment claim.

What the study found. A clinical study enrolled 35 infertile men with oligospermia (sperm concentration below 20 million/mL). Participants received 100 mg of processed Shilajit twice daily after major meals for 90 days. Twenty-eight men completed the study. Among those completers, researchers reported significant improvements from baseline in sperm concentration, total sperm count, sperm motility and normal sperm count. The study also reported reductions in seminal oxidative-stress marker MDA and increases in serum testosterone and FSH. [2]

The reported changes were substantial within that study population: approximately 61.4% improvement in total sperm count, 37.6% in sperm concentration, 12.4–17.4% in motility measures and 18.9% in normal sperm count compared with baseline. [2] Those findings deserve to be communicated — but as results in this study population, not as results a man should expect personally.

The most important distinction: the study measured semen parameters. It did not establish higher natural conception rates, clinical pregnancy rates or live births. Improving a semen parameter is potentially relevant to fertility, but it is not the same as demonstrating that more couples conceive or have a baby.

Design limitations. The study was relatively small and compared measurements before and after the intervention among completers. It was not a large placebo-controlled fertility trial. The accurate description is: "A small human clinical study in men with oligospermia reported improvements in several semen parameters after 90 days of processed Shilajit."

Men already struggling to conceive should not be diverted into supplement shopping. Current NICE guidance recommends clinical assessment of fertility problems and includes semen analysis in assessing male-factor causes. [6] Shilajit can be discussed as an area of emerging evidence. It should not delay appropriate investigation.

Energy, cognitive performance and vitality

Energy is one of the most common reasons men become interested in Shilajit, but "energy" can mean many different things: less physical fatigue, better concentration, less afternoon sluggishness, better training capacity, more motivation. The evidence for Shilajit is not equally strong across all of those outcomes.

Physical fatigue has more human evidence than "mental energy." The eight-week study in 63 recreationally active men gives us legitimate evidence around physical resilience under fatigue. It does not establish better concentration, less brain fog, greater motivation or more productive working hours.

Shilajit is not a stimulant. The better-known human research has generally investigated Shilajit through repeated supplementation over weeks or months, rather than demonstrating a rapid stimulant response after one serving. Not feeling a buzz does not prove Shilajit is ineffective.

Cognitive performance requires much more restraint. Online claims commonly include better focus, improved memory, mental clarity and reduced brain fog. The male human studies primarily concern physical fatigue, testosterone, male reproductive parameters and muscular or connective-tissue biology. We do not currently have comparable male-specific human evidence showing that Shilajit reliably improves memory, concentration or executive performance.

Preclinical research explains why researchers are interested — not what has been proven. Animal research involving chronic fatigue, stress biology and mitochondrial bioenergetics is biologically interesting. It belongs under "why researchers are interested" rather than "what Shilajit has been proven to do for the male brain."

Rasayana and male vitality

Shilajit has traditionally been positioned as an Ayurvedic Rasayana — the testosterone study itself uses that description. [1] That traditional context belongs in the article rather than being treated as decorative history. But Rasayana should not be reduced to "testosterone boosting" or "ancient male enhancement." That would distort the traditional framework just as much as ignoring Ayurveda altogether.

Rasayana is broader than male hormones. The Caraka Saṃhitā places Rasayana within a wider approach to maintaining health, bodily and mental strength, and individual suitability. That is very different from the modern supplement funnel: low energy → low testosterone → supplement → more testosterone. The Ayurvedic perspective asks a wider question about the quality and sustainability of vitality itself. [7]

Vajikarana should be acknowledged — but kept distinct. Classical Ayurvedic organisation treats Rasayana and Vajikarana as distinct, adjacent concepts. Vajikarana is the more specifically reproductive and sexual-health-oriented domain. Traditional classification provides context; modern claims still require modern evidence.

Rasayana is not anti-ageing. A much better modern translation is: long-term resilience rather than immediate stimulation, nourishment rather than forcing output, appropriate measure rather than dose chasing, consistency rather than constant experimentation, individual suitability rather than assuming every man needs the same thing.

Modern evidence and Ayurveda sit beside each other — neither impersonates the other. Modern studies give us measurable male outcomes such as testosterone, sperm parameters and fatigue-related muscular performance. Ayurveda contributes a different layer: a longer-term view of resilience, nourishment, appropriate use and individual suitability. The classical framework does not prove a testosterone, fertility or performance endpoint. The modern studies do that work where those endpoints have actually been measured.

Who might find Shilajit relevant

Men interested in midlife hormonal health. The controlled testosterone trial specifically studied healthy men aged 45–55, making Shilajit genuinely relevant to men interested in what happens to vitality and hormonal physiology as they move through midlife. That does not mean "men over 40 need Shilajit" or that Shilajit reverses age-related testosterone decline.

Men who train and care about physical resilience. The eight-week controlled study in recreationally active men makes Shilajit reasonably interesting to men thinking about training, physical resilience and fatigue-related performance. That does not mean every man who goes to the gym needs it.

Men exploring reproductive health. There is direct human research in men with oligospermia reporting improvements in several semen parameters. Men thinking seriously about reproductive health may understandably find Shilajit relevant. That must not become "men trying for a baby should take Shilajit."

Men interested in vitality without wanting another stimulant. Some men are not primarily looking for bigger muscles, higher testosterone or fertility support. They may simply be asking whether there is something that can sit within a healthier routine and support long-term vitality. That is where Ayurveda and Rasayana matter.

Busy professional men — with an important qualification. A man managing work pressure, training, family responsibilities and inconsistent recovery may find the broader Shilajit story appealing. But his exhaustion should not be turned into a sales opportunity. Sometimes tired means you need sleep. Shilajit may sit within a better routine. It should not become the reason somebody keeps an unsustainable routine unchanged.

Shilajit does not become necessary simply because somebody is male, over 40, goes to the gym, works long hours or wants healthy testosterone. A man can read the research, find it interesting and still conclude: "I don't need this." That freedom actually strengthens the brand.

Safety — male-specific considerations

Testosterone replacement therapy. Because purified Shilajit has increased total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS in a controlled trial of healthy middle-aged men, anyone already receiving testosterone replacement or another hormone-directed treatment should discuss Shilajit with the clinician managing that treatment. Do not stack Shilajit with TRT to chase higher numbers, and do not adjust a prescribed testosterone dose because you have started Shilajit.

Prostate cancer and androgen-deprivation therapy. A man receiving androgen-deprivation treatment for prostate cancer should discuss Shilajit with his oncology or urology team rather than adding it independently. This does not mean Shilajit has been shown to cause or worsen prostate cancer. It means deliberately adding a supplement that has affected androgen measurements may be inappropriate when the medical treatment is deliberately trying to suppress androgen signalling.

Fertility treatment. If somebody is undergoing fertility investigations, assisted reproductive treatment or being monitored by an andrology or fertility clinic, they should tell that team before adding Shilajit. Current NICE guidance does not recommend supplements as treatment for semen abnormalities. [6]

Erectile dysfunction. A specific interaction between Shilajit and PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil or tadalafil has not been well established in direct human research. A man's prescribed ED treatment and its established contraindications take priority over speculative supplement advice.

Quality remains part of safety. The encouraging safety observations in the processed-Shilajit fertility study — where hepatic and renal profiles were reported as unaltered at the studied dose — apply to that preparation and study population. They do not prove every Shilajit product is safe or that contaminant testing is unnecessary.

Shilajit Gold+ for men

If the male-specific research has made you interested in Shilajit, the next question should not simply be "Where can I buy some?" The testosterone research used purified Shilajit. The male fertility study used processed Shilajit. That matters. Natural origin does not remove the need for appropriate preparation, clear formulation and independent testing.

Gold+ is not our "Shilajit for men." The fact that several Shilajit studies were conducted in men makes Shilajit particularly relevant to a men's evidence article. It does not transform Gold+ into a male-only product or a testosterone booster. The product remains what it is: Himalayan Shilajit presented in independently tested finished formulations, with an Ayurvedic formulation philosophy and transparent measured composition.

The strongest connection to the male evidence is the word "purified." The testosterone trial did not give men unspecified raw material collected from a mountain. It investigated purified Shilajit. The fertility research refers to processed Shilajit. That supports a principle Gold+ should stand behind: ancient does not mean raw. Appropriate preparation is part of taking a complex natural substance seriously. Recent analytical research showing substantial elemental variation between Shilajit samples of different geographical origins gives another reason not to treat the word "Shilajit" as a complete quality specification. The male studies reinforce why product quality matters — they do not prove Gold+ efficacy. Shilajit Gold+ was not the product used in those clinical trials. We therefore cannot claim that our Capsules or Resin will reproduce the same testosterone, fertility or performance results. What those studies do reinforce is why preparation and product identity matter.

Current Gold+ quality information reports Eurofins fulvic-acid measurements of 79.22% for Gold+ Capsules (report AR-258-2025-20051564-01) and 76.74% for Gold+ Resin (report AR-258-2025-20051565-01), alongside screening for arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. Those figures tell you something about the tested composition of the submitted finished products. They do not prove 79.22% equals more testosterone.

Both formats are equally legitimate for men. A man does not get a more authentic Ayurvedic experience merely because he chooses the most inconvenient option.
